Adam’s Cellar Notes
2010 ROSE PROFILE
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I thought it might be nice to speak a few words about our Rose. The Rose we make at the Grange is always lovely and well received by the public, I attribute this to the production process. Our Rose has always been built from scratch. That is from day 1 we know it’s going to be a Rose and not just an after thought of two blended wines (a white and a red.) We start with our Pinot Noir and Gamay grapes which we destem and cold soak on the skins for 48 hours. Then we press and ferment at a cold temperature. Being a highly aromatic wine, we bottle it in winter with our release date being Mother’s Day, this year is no exception. The 2010 Rose has a deeper red colour than past vintages(ripe year,) with fresh aromas of Strawberry and Cherry followed by notes of red currants. The wine is tad drier than past vintages as that’s what the wine wanted (I listen to the wine.) Overall, a great wine from a great vintage. For those seeking Rose for Valentine’s Day there are still a few cases of 2009 at the Winery and I believe some bottles left at the LCBO.
CHEERS,

August is Pinot Noir month
As we approach our 8th harvest on the farm we are celebrating pinot noir in all its many expressions. Around here with 17 acres in production now pinot noir makes its way into several of our wines … picked early in the season pinot noir is integral to our Grange BRUT and new for 2008 with an anticipated release date of early 2011 a traditionally made sparkler made from only pinot noir grapes with a delicate hint of pink. In the tasting room now is the 2009 Trumpour’s Mill Rose (our 7th vintage) which is 50% pinot noir and 50% gamay noir. Like many roses this wine is most popular in the summer with its lighter body and fresh strawberry cherry nose. Trumpour’s Mill Pinot Noir is available for $16.95 this month and is an easy wine to pair with summer fare particularily if you serve it slightly cool, medium bodied and complex on the palate with cherries and a sweet earthiness like warm beets in the sunshine; this wine embodies everything that we love about the County terroire. Last but certainly not least is Diana Block pinot noir. The Diana Block (the field behind the barn) was first planted in late May 2001 and it is the grapes grown in this vineyard that are hand sorted after they are handpicked for inclusion in this Grange wine. We use Ganamedes tanks which are special because they eliminate the need for pumping over resulting in both better extraction as well as a gentler process and after pressing the wine is gravity fed down to the barrel cellar where it is left to develop for around seven months before the final determination is made ….. as only exceptional wines will carry the Grange label. We did not make a Diana Block Pinot Noir in the 2008 vintage and we will be assessing the 2009 later this month.
There is lots to see and taste this month at the farm …… hope you will get a chance to stop by!
Rosé Released! Come try our brand new 2009 release!
Rose Released!
Come try our brand new 2009 Trumpour’s Mill Rosé, whose release has been a long time coming for us as we’ve been sold out of the 2008 since the end of last summer. This new Rosé is incredibly unique in comparison to all of our previous ones. It is for one thing, sweeter than any Rosé we’ve produced. Not to the point where it is overly sweet, but it is certainly a two on the sugar scale. It is all sweet bright fruit on the nose and palate, with lots of citrus tones and lots of berries. But what gets you excited right away about this wine has got to be its color; it is a brightest, sharpest pink on a Rosé any of us has seen on the market. Perfect for the coming summer and a perfect match for our new picnics!
March Tasting Notes: Spring Releases
More Tasting Notes…
We have just done our final tastings of our first Spring 2010 releases, and there is lots to be excited about! The first of the new releases will probably be our 2009 Trumpour’s Mill Rosé, which has been a long time coming for us; we’ve been sold out of the 2008 since the end of the summer.
The 2008 Riesling is also soon to be released. With notes of citrus like key lime, lemon zest and mandarin orange our 2008 Trumpour’s Mill Riesling is a perfectly light and refreshing wine. And because this Riesling is in a slightly off-dry style it is the perfect accompaniment to spicy fare. With its pale straw color, notes of flinty minerality, very subtle petrol and a bright shot of lemon on the finish, it is the kind of beautifully balanced wine that you can sip on its own, or have paired perfectly with a meal.
Lastly we have our 2008 Grange of Prince Edward line Victoria Block Chardonnay. Its Golden color is always a sight to behold. It suits the spicy pear, vanilla, custard notes that are found on the nose and palate. But as always, like all good County wines, has a lovely acid backbone that brings with it fresh apple and lemon notes on the palate, good overall balance and the potential for longevity and continual development (we’re saying until 2013).
